The '712 patent covers the an electrical readout system for Selectrons. Reading the miniscule currents of the electrical output of a Selectron in the presence of the large voltage swings of the gating signals was non-trivial. Time-gating allows the signal from a single element to be detected in the presence of the capacitively-coupled signals from all the other elements. This method is not unlike the transmit/receive switches employed in radar systems: Allow the large signals to settle before looking for the small ones.
